Many printing jobs require inks that are formulated to be fade resistant. Unfortunately, most printed materials exposed to light eventually fade.

There are specific factors that affect the resistance of an ink particle to fade. The two main factors include the size of the particle and the chemicals that go into the particle. Without getting too scientific on you, it all has to do with electrons and the particles ability to hold onto electrons. Light has the ability to change the make up of a particle, releasing electrons from ink particles, thus resulting in fading of the ink and a not so appealing package.

If you use polyethylene bags, sheeting, and pouches that are displayed under indoor florescent lighting or in direct sunlight in store windows or outdoors, you may be interested in fade resistant inks. Fade resistant inks will yield images that resist fading when exposed to UV rays. When ordering your product, explain the nature of the job and its intended end use to your sales representative. Also be sure to make your sales representative aware if the printed job will be displayed outdoors and exposed to weather. This information can help your sales representative determine the amount of lightfastness required to be built into the formation. Fade resistant pigments are quite costly, so you want a sales representative who can help keep your ink costs down by adding the proper fade resistant pigments to ensure the required degree of lightfastness.

The key is to talk to a knowledgeable sales representative and ask for light fast inks to provide top-notch performance with UV ink applications. After all, color is key for many packages and helps your product catch the eye and be recognized. For excellent visual impact a team effort is required among ink manufactures, sales representatives, product manufacturers, and the client.

Polyethylene 101: All About Construction and Agricultural “C&A” Sheeting

Construction & Agricultural Sheeting, known as C & A sheeting, is a polyethylene sheeting designed for general purpose construction, agricultural, and industrial usage. Whether you need all-weather protection for indoor or outdoor storage; rot, mold, and mildew resistance; protection from moisture, grease, and oil; or a barrier against solvents, acids, or alkalis, C&A industrial sheeting is tough, flexible, lightweight and easy to handle. The following are all the details you’ve ever wanted to know about C&A sheeting.

Basic Uses:

Used in a wide variety of applications. Polyethylene provides an excellent vapor barrier for the protection of concrete slabs and foundations. Proper placement of polyethylene sheeting in walls during construction can almost completely prevent ambient air and moisture infiltration into homes and buildings, thus increasing their energy efficiency. Agricultural applications (black sheeting only) include retention of soil moisture, inhibition of weed growth, and coverage of pit and trench silos for inexpensive storage.

Scope:

Specification covers both black and clear 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 10 mil sizes. Most common widths include 10′,12′ 18′, 20′,24′,28′, 30′ and 40′.

Life Expectancy:

Clear polyethylene sheeting is not recommended for greenhouse use or any other application involving long-term exposure to sunlight. Black sheeting is recommended for applications not exceeding 90 days of sunlight exposure. Special additives are available at request for extended outdoor applications up to 2 years.

Shelf Life:

Polyethylene sheeting has a shelf life of approximately 2 years if not exposed to sunlight or extreme heat.

Adhesion:

Due to variety of resins and additives available, it is often difficult to bond two pieces of film together. Two adhesives that have proven to be successful in the past are Universal Adhesives’ Spray Adhesive and DURO All Purpose Spray Adhesive distributed by Loctite Corporation.

Temperature Range:

Usable range for LDPE has been defined as -60 °F to 150 °F.

Recyclability:

This sheeting is rated as a Class 4- LDPE for recycling purposes.

Choose HDPE for your Bag Inserting Equipment

HDPE, what is it and what can it do for you?

HDPE, or high density polyethylene film, is a linear polymer prepared from ethylene by a catalytic process. High density polyethylene is just that, a high density closely packed structure with a somewhat higher chemical structure than low density polyethylene (LDPE).

So why choose HDPE?

The advantages alone can answer why. HDPE is an extremely versatile material with advantages such as the non-blocking characteristics in addition to added stiffness, impact and wear resistance, flexibility, chemical resistance, food contact acceptability, processability, and toughness. Another benefit of HDPE is that it is harder, more opaque, and can withstand rather higher temperatures than LDPE. HDPE also has advantages in many machine applications such as Pearson’s automated insertion machines, OK International’s packaging automation systems, and K&R’spolybag inserter systems. These machines place the bags in cases or shipping containers with even cuffs around the flaps.

With LDPE blocking can occur, which stops production and causes downtime, neither of which you want on high-speed packaging lines. However, HDPE homopolymer resins are linear in nature and these HDPE resins exhibit hard, slippery surfaces that resist blocking. Therefore, with HDPE you don’t have stops in production or downtime.The bottom line is that bag inserter lines love HDPE’s non blocking, stiffer film characteristics. And for an added benefit, HDPE has a lower moisture and oxygen transmission rate, which allows for longer product freshness.

If you weren’t aware of high density polyethylene (HDPE) and its advantages before, I bet you’re glad you are now.

How to Measure for a Pallet Cover or Box Liner

Determining the size of your polyethylene bag is quite simple. All that is needed are some basic geometry skills.

Pallet Cover

To figure out the size of a pallet cover one must need to know the dimensions of the load. (length X width X depth). Once the load dimensions are known, the following steps can be taken to determine the size of the pallet cover:

  1. To start you should consider your width as the larger of the dimensions. (width or depth)
  2. If a pallet load is 48” wide X 42” deep X 36” high you take the 48 inches and add 4 inches as you do not want a cover that’s too tight. The bag width will be 52 inches.
  3. Now we will add another 2 inches to the depth (42) to get the gusset. The bag thus far is 52 X 44.
  4. To determine the length we need to take the height (36) and add half the depth, since the bag has a seal that will fall in the middle of the top of the pallet. We take our depth of 42 and divide it in half to get 21. Now we add 21 +36 = 57. We also typically add another 2 inches so that the load has some extra coverage.
  5. The final cover dimensions are 52 X 44 X 59.

Box Liner

Determining appropriate box liner dimensions are similar to determining pallet cover dimension except now the bag will sit inside the box rather than covering a pallet.

Let’s take a box that’s 14” length X 12” depth X 21” high.

  1. Add 2” to the width (14”) to give us 16” wide.
  2. Then add another 2” to the depth (12”) to give us 14” depth. Our first to dimensions of the bag are 16” X 14”. This represents the bag width and gusset.
  3. Now the tricky part is determining the bags length. We are going to take the box depth of 12” and add that to the height of 21” to get 33”. Now add 6 more inches so the bag can be tied and closed properly when filled inside the box.
  4. Our final bag dimensions are 16 X 14 X 37.

These are the basic rules, but some Pallet covers and box liners require some adjustments in size depending on the applications.

Gaylord Liners are used for many applications

A gaylord box is a pallet-sized box, typically cardboard, that is used for storage and shipping of bulk quantities.

In most cases, the products being shipped within a gaylord box are enclosed in an inner plastic bag that is used to protect the contents of the gaylord box. Those large bags, or liners, can have a variety of names: gaylord liners, tote liners, bin liners and combo liners are the most common.

They’re designed to protect the product from outside pollutants, toxins, and other contaminants during processing, storing, and transporting. Therefore, they must be strong and tear-resistant. These liners are used for many different packaging applications such as food packaging, resin products, color concentrates, chemicals, powdered products, pharmaceutical products, metal particles, and many more.

Depending on the product the liner is protecting, they are available in a wide array of structures. A few questions to consider:

  • Do I need low density resin, or high density resin?
  • Does it need to be bolstered for added strength with compounds like hexene or metallocene?
  • Does the liner need to be USFDA approved?
  • Do anti-stat properties need to be added?

Gaylord boxes come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, and therefore, so do gaylord liners. When requesting a quote for a gaylord liner, you’ll need to know what size box you’re using. Measure your gaylord box by width (W), length (L), and depth (D). A good rule of thumb for figuring out an appropriate liner size for your box would be the following: See diagram.

  • Width (W) of the liner = Box width + 2 inches
  • Length (L) of the liner = Box length +2 inches
  • Depth (D) of the liner = Box depth + half of the box length + 12 inches.

However, you may need your liner size to be larger if you plan on tying off the enclosed product at the open end of the liner. It’s probably best to inform your sales representative not just of the box dimensions, but also how you’ll be shipping/storing your product so they can make a recommendation of the liner size you’ll need.

Some common gaylord liner sizes include:

  • 52 x 44 x 96 x 1.25 mil (thickness)
  • 52 x 44 x 96 x 2 mil
  • 50 x 38 x 90 x 3 mil
  • 50 x 44 x 76 x 4 mil

  4. Make sure your bag is large enough to hold your product but not over-sized and baggy.
  5. Be sure that the material is the right match for your product so your package can handle the weight of your product. Remember that if your bag rips your product could be damaged.
  6. Frozen products require freezer grade polyethylene or the film will become brittle and crack.
